RELIGIOUS WEDDING CEREMONIES

Religious marriages in England and Wales can take place in an Anglican Church or any other religious building registered for marriage. Arrangements should be made directly with the Vicar of the Church involved as there is usually no need to involve the local register office.

For religious ceremonies other than in the Church of England or Church in Wales, you should usually first arrange to see the person in charge of marriages at the alternative religious building; normally live in the same district as the Church or religious building and give formal notice to the Superintendent Registrar at your local register office.

In Scotland, a religious ceremony which includes other belief systems, can take place anywhere and be solemnised by a minister, clergyman, priest, pastor, or other person entitled to do so.

In Ireland, marriages by religious ceremony may be performed according to the customs and ceremonies of the Church or religious body which is carrying out the ceremony.
